What some people may not realise is that Steemit is much more than a social site. It is a platform to develop applications on. The blockchain is basically a database of transactions. Here are some of the services that are being built on it.
DTube is an alternative to Youtube. Video are stored on IPFS, which is a decentralised file system. Files are spread across multiple hosts all over the world. Each video is associated with a Steemit post. The DTube site presents these much like other video sites. There are some issues with getting smooth playback and it does strange things to the tags, but it's very promising. I hope we will see the ability to play back videos directly on Steemit soon. The site takes a cut of the rewards to cover costs.
Mangosteem
This doesn't have its own account to follow, but is behind it. Mangosteem is a chat app something like the Steemit chat, but each channel is stored as comments on a post. It's in the very early stages, but still interesting. It lacks some features you would expect, but chat messages may be voted up or flagged like regular comments, so you could earn from it. There's potential to provide people with support and they can reward you for it.
This service is not available yet, but it's worth following to get the updates. It's intended as a better Twitter. Imagine if you got paid for tweeting!
I'll admit I haven't been on busy in a while. It's an alternative way to use Steemit. It certainly looks nice and it has neat features such as private chat (not using the Steem blockchain) and a convenient way to transfer Steem to the account you are viewing.
I expect we will see a lot more such applications in the near future. I hope some will be radically new ideas instead of trying to replace existing services. In any case they provide more reasons to get into Steemit.
I expect most people are watching the Steem price. I've generally used Coinmarketcap, but there are some other sites. World Coin Index shows prices from various exchanges, which can differ quite a bit.
There's also CoinGecko.
Steem on!
I'll buy guitar picks for Steem Dollars
