Christian Eriksen's contract expires next year. He will then be a free agent to sign for any club that will take him. There will be no shortage of takers. No wonder Tottenham want to cash in on the want away star right now. 60 million in the bank is better than nothing. United and Tottenham agreed terms but the player turned down a move. It was seen as a step down for Eriksen who refused to go to the Red Devils. How times have changed. His eyes are on Madrid. La Liga has started but they have until 2nd September to come in for him. If they wait then they will get him next year on a free transfer. Something Daniel Levy does not want to happen.
Tottenham have a policy where they keep extending players contracts offering incremental increases. They never break their wage structure and offer the players just enough to stay. If other clubs come in for the player then they have to pay a hefty transfer fee which turns other clubs off. Luka Modric had 4 years left on his contract and left for £30 million, Bale had 3 years left and left for £85 million. Kyle Walker 3 years left £50 million and so on and so forth. Not bad business by Spurs boss Daniel Levy.
Harry Kane has signed deals in February 2015, another 5 year deal in December 2016 and now a six year deal in June 2018 . It is safe to call him a Tottenham player. But the players are getting wide to this method and are now leaving their contracts run their course. Winks, Deli Ali and Davies just signed new deals. The ink was bearly dry from their previous contracts

Toby Alderweireld was the first player to not conform on to this way of doing business and refused to sign a new contract. The payment increase was laughable so he stalled. And stalled and then stalled some more. Talks broke down and now there was a year left on his contract. He is now holding all the cards.

Other players noticed that Toby had the club by the short and curly's and they are now deciding to do the same. Now both of these valuable players are in their final years of their contract. Over £100 million of talent walking out the door for nothing. In 2021 Eric Dier and Danny Rose are also out of contract. There is a trend forming here. The players are now in control and the era of low wages at Tottenham is going to come to an abrupt end. On a free the players can demand massive wages since there is no fees involved. Clubs are going to have to find a way to take back control.
