A player with the technique to score a goal from a set play can offer an incredible advantage to any team
There have been many free kick specialists throughout the years such as Roberto Carlos, David Beckham, Zico, Diego Maradona and Ronald Koeman to name a few.
More recently Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have scored a multitude of scorching goals directly via free kicks.
A retired Brazilian footballer, Juninho Pernambucano currently holds the record at over 70 goals scored directly from free kicks.
For me though the most important goals are those scored under pressure, when your team needs a goal to progress to the next round of a big tournament.
Great players perform better in the big games, and rise to the occasion under pressure.
It's all very well scoring a free kick when your team is 3-0 up and coasting to victory against an inferior side, but getting on the score sheet in the latter stages of a Champions league match, or World Cup is an entirely different proposition.
In my opinion, Brazilian Ronaldinho's Free Kick versus England, a goal that fired his team into the semi finals of the 2002 World Cup, was one of the most important in football history.
Shortly after he scored, Brazil were down to 10 men, so it was a vital goal.
That year Brazil went onto win the tournament.
In your opinion what is the most important free kick you've seen scored in a match?
Have you seen any promising new free kick specialists in the game?
I'm looking forward to reading your comments, and as always appreciate your upvotes and resteems.
