Did you know that a fox in biology shares the family as our domesticated dogs. The word Fox basically means „thick-haired tail“ . In this post you will get some cliffnotes about foxes in general, combined with photography (free to use for your project).
In earlier years common thought was that foxes are solitary animals, but studies in Oxford showed, that foxes had a significant social life in families. Foxes live in family tribes and have a complicated social life, which is not fully discovered until today.
Habitat:
Foxes do have the biggest habitat of all wildliving carnivores. From the far north polar circle From far north polar area until the tropical areas ,in Northamerica to Newfoundland and South Florida to Mexico. Europe until Australia.
That led to problems. Foxes were imported from England to Australia. The endemic marsupials were an easy prey for the foxes. Foxes were hunted down merciless. Until today New Zealand is free of foxes and fox hunting in England is a big thing.
Though it is the same family with our beloved dogs, foxes are generally smaller. Males are with up to 7.5kg bodyweight slighlty bigger than females and average 100-110mm long.
A fox has a lifespan from one to three years, but may up to live even longer than 10 years.
Nutrition:
A fox is not a cherry picker. He eats everything, what provides him with a high level of energy.
So its hard to say what a fox really eats, because it differs from area to area. In general he prefers easy pray, field rabbit or deer is usually out of his range, unless they are ill, young or very old.
He likes chicken though.
In urban areas foxes prefer waste and they are thieves. So they watch out for bird and catfood and try to steal it.
