Christiania is home to 850 freedom fighters, people who make up their own rules and tread their own path, it's a thriving community filled with colourful characters,
businesses, cafes, restaurants and the famous green light district where they have openly sold cannabis since 1971.
The spirit of Christiania quickly developed into one of the hippie movement, the squatter movement, collectivism and anarchism, in contrast to the site's previous military use.
Ludvigsen was a co-author of Christiania's mission statement, dating from 1971, which offers the following:
The objective of Christiania is to create a self-governing society whereby each and every individual holds themselves responsible for the well-being of the entire community. Our society is to be economically self-sustaining and, as such, our aspiration is to be steadfast in our conviction that psychological and physical destitution can be averted.
Christiania is a colourful place filled with creative people who have dropped out of "normal society". although it's frequently reported to be a dangerous place in the media I have been coming here for 8yrs and have never felt unsafe, of course, it has its problems which are mostly within the drug dealing community but no more than you find in "normal society" in fact hard drugs like crack and heroin are not tolerated in Christiania which in my eye's makes it much safer than behind Copenhagens train station where they openly sell and consume all hard drugs.
I love Christiania for many reasons but to think that this land which the government have tried to get back for 40 yrs so they can turn it into luxury apartments is still a Freetown is a testament to what can be achieved when people band together and stand up for what they believe in.
