You don't need any permission to take liberty, to live your life on your own accord by making autonomous choices and not getting affected by others sniffling around one's business.
Many of us, starting young, went through compulsory schooling where we had to ask permission for nearly everything. It's an acquired trait to prepare children for obeying and following, as that's what the vast majority of adults deal with everyday. Taking liberty from wherever we can find it has become like an atrophied muscle, not exercised enough to the point where it's immobilized by making a burden out of living.
Detractors might counter this by thinking that if we are to take liberty and be free to do as we please, we would eventually violate someone else's freedom. This of course begs the question of what freedom means. Certainly if someone has power over you or dominates a group of people they are denying freedom, having in their minds other more important values.
In any case, I would give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they genuinely think as how Montaigne says, "You can only profit from someone else's lost." Remember, there are boundaries in which a government of freedom is suppose to respect and ensure individual rights are being protected, in a word—justice. So if you take liberty into your own hands perhaps by using crypto, self-education, or other voluntary means it comes at a loss for the ruling class; if they start getting fearful, the more they will become uneasy attempting to regulate and intervene, ultimately loosing their domination as the sovereignty of the individual becomes increasingly recognized throughout society.
Of course there are certain requirements and pressures civilization has over the individual. Social norms, family values, and even mental traps of your own creations are all things which are done freely not forced upon, although depending how extreme you rebel from them you could face some ostracism. It's best to understand these issues foremost and see if you can navigate them to your best ability; and I'm sure this comes with experimentation as well as experience.
It should also be kept in mind that depending on where you reside or which jurisdiction you are under, things will vary in degrees on what is actually allowed or not subject to direct and possibly dire consequences. The best approach would be to take as much liberty as one possibly can in proportion to not getting extorted or faced with physical threats.
