After scanning the top news headlines, Candace clicked on an education link leading to a story on the neuroscience of creativity. A pop-up ad blasted atonal music before she could jab at the mute key.
Raphael reacted in a predictably irritated fashion by aimlessly throwing the tennis ball he was about to roll toward Lucie. Ironically, it hit the piano with a discordant plunk and only grazed a framed family photo.
After fetching the ball herself and rolling it to Lucie who dutifully returned it to Raphael, repairing the comforting loop, Candace set the photo upright and lingered over the image. It had been 4 years since they lost Uncle Enzy to brain cancer. Enzo, or Enz to Candace, wasn’t really an uncle. When Raphael was born Candace insisted that his title reflect a bond running much deeper than typical friendships. Theirs was a beautifully atypical friendship.
She returned to her laptop and began skimming the article. She was intrigued by a section on “cognitive disinhibition,” something about creativity requiring less control over our thoughts. She was about to say to herself out loud, Well then, I must be highly creative, when she heard Raphael playing the piano. She couldn’t place the tune, although it sounded strangely familiar.
