Take Your Vitamins
From a small gap in the folds of his blanket fort he had just enough of a window to watch Saturday Morning Cartoons. Beyond the cartoons there were live action shows like HR PuffnStuff and Lidsville.
But after the Flintstone Vitamins commercials and Schoolhouse Rock, it was the real showtime: American Bandstand followed by the Soul Train. With performers expertly lip-synching while flipping metaphorical birds to the status quo in their bell bottoms and wild prints, the television transported him to his happy place- a world of expression, irreverence, and individual style.
After stapling paper fringe to the sleeves of his shirt, he mouthed the words to the Ohio Players’ Roller Coaster while executing the moves of his arms and legs in perfect harmony in front of the bathroom mirror.
When he looked more closely, he realized if he squinted his eyes (though squinting at someone was forbidden in “this” household), he could see a pathway. Climbing on the bathroom counter, one foot in the sink, he reached forward with his hand and realized there was no barrier. And so he stepped sure-footed into the world of music and dance and fun. But before leaving his ordinary life, he grabbed the bottle of vitamins, just in case.
