"Have you ever been to Texas?" she asks, in what I assume is a real Texan drawl.
"No," I say, smiling and fidgeting with the beer mat. I hate small talk. Not for the first time, I wonder why I agreed to come out on this date.
"It'll be fun," Dana said. "I know this girl, she'll be into you for sure. And it'll be good for her to meet a 'normal' guy for a change." She didn't do air-quotes around the word "normal", but I could hear them. I am used to it. People often use them when they refer to me. I think they think it is some kind of compliment.
To be almost normal, but not quite.
Dana comes back carrying two pints. Her idiot-of-a-date carries the other two. He smiles as he puts my pint down on the table in front of me. Beer sloshes out onto the table. I wince at the wasted ale. I hate waste. Particularly when it comes to alcohol.
"Mary-Lou," I say, a smile forced upon my lips. "Was just telling me about Texas, weren't you?" I look at my date.
She looks at me blankly.
"Who is Mary-Lou?" she says...
