I think of mice in terms of computers now. Although we do not usually refer to them in the plural, computer mice are a critical need in my life. I am old enough to remember when computers did not have mice and they were a revelation when they came.
I used to be a wizard with shortcut keys because that was all we had in the early 1980’s. I worked in large company processing daily cash from many sites and it was very detailed and exacting work.
At the time mice were introduced with new computers, you had to get on a list to get one. The important people got them first. We little people in accounting were not determined to be important at that time.
But then it turned out the none of the actual office workers who did everything on computers had mice - and all the bigwigs who did nothing on the computers did have mice. So one weekend the IT people came in and switched out all the computers so that the people doing the work could have a mouse and be more efficient.
A nightmare ensued on Monday when the big guys came into see no mice and old computers on their desks. Then they saw us happy little people with the new computers. They all tried to say they needed them for work, but they lost that battle and all us low level people got to keep them.
It was a long few months of haterade before the next bunch of new computers came in.
