“Thanks Mom. Of course I needed more.”
She’d been been upset to see my kids drinking out of jars.
“Didn’t I give you glasses last time I came? What happened to the plastic ones? And the mugs? The ones that look like Star Wars memorabilia?
“Are you saving them for a special occasion? Are you hiding them? Why are you drinking out of jars?”
The questions were the same each and every visit. The “I’m here to visit you” gift always the same. Glasses, glasses, and more sip-ware.
Her annoyance is enough to make me annoyed.
I don’t know where the lids are. Yes, I heard that you found one behind the bed. No, the “good” glasses are not hidden in the garage.
Mom, I DO NOT know what happened to the glasses you bought last time.
I don’t think my husband gives them away, no I don’t think he takes them to work with him.
Yes, my car has 16 cup holders but the glasses you bought last time are not there. I don’t bother to speak these words, she can’t hear me anyway.
“But where could all the glasses be?” She wonders out loud as my daughter smashes a new mug onto the floor sending coffee and glass bits everywhere.
******English is not my first language - my non-Native speaker status is usually not noticeable, today it was. Glasses and cups are not them same thing, although glass cups are real. I didn’t realize I was making that mistake Until I started writing about the cup holders in my car. I left the piece as is anyway - I think mistakes encourage greatness.
