Davey's Girl
Davey licked his frozen yogurt cone with relish. His young eyes twinkling with merriment at his purchase. He rode his bike for a mile to Mary's Ice Isle to meet Tammy and paid for two cones from his allowance , saved for the past month. It was worth every penny to see her smile. Tammy was 12, just a year younger than him.
She smiled between licks and held her pink bike handle with the fringe with one hand. A drop of melting frozen yogurt ran down her hand and she snatched it with her tongue, laughing.
"Thank you, Davey," she said shyly.
"You're welcome," he said with nonchalance. "We can do this next month, too, if you want."
"I wish I could, Davey, but Daddy has been transferred to Oklahoma. We move next month.
Davey's smile wavered as he looked at Tammy's freckled nose.
"Oklahoma is a long way off."
Tammy nodded. She bit her waffle cone and shifted her feet on the gravel drive.
"Well, I guess we can talk on the phone?"
"Yeah, I think we can," she replied.
"I gotta go, Davie. Thanks for being my friend."
"Bye, Tammy. I'll miss our dates."
Tammy leaned over to Davey's Schwinn and planted a sticky kiss on his cheek, then pushed off with her left foot on the pedal. Her card motor on the back wheel attached with a clothes pin whirring as she turned the bend.
