Suffer the Little Children
"Mister, can you spare a dolla'?" pleaded a boy, short and dirty faced. He smiled up at the dapper man. He held out a small tin cup and shook it to show that it was empty. The man, dressed in a handsome, striped suit looked down at the boy. His lip curled and he said, "Step aside, boy," and walked swiftly by the barefooted urchin.
"Oh, Magnolia, it's such a pleasure to see you here!" the man said to the raven haired beauty as he came upon her.
"Why Frederick, it's good to see you this fine evening."
Frederick hurried to turn back to follow Magnolia who was making her way toward the tent with the strong man, holding his cap. "Wait.....wait Magnolia, I see you are not accompanied and would like to offer....."
Magnolia reached the small street urchin begging and bent to touch his shoulder in concern. He saw her reach into her change wallet and fold some bills, setting them in his cup.
Frederick huffed by her side, taking her elbow. "Magnolia, dear, it's unwise to give to the carnival children, and, you should be careful touching them. They can carry diseases."
Magnolia turned to face Frederick and raised up on her heels to look hard at him with eyes narrowed, eyebrows arched.
"Frederick, you aught to be ashamed of yourself! My Mamma taught me to suffer the little children and here you are behaving like a miser," tipping her chin up. She turned, spinning on her heel, and took the boy's dirty hand in hers walked toward a stand with the warm scent of home cooked food wafting out.
