The Dinner Pary
The dinner party consisted of six couples, all dressed in casual clothing. Marie called them to the table with a giggle.
"For tonight's entertainment I hired Aggie, a medium!"
Ellen looked at Carlo with a startled expression and mouthed to him a medium? He tilted his head and shrugged as the other couples headed to the living room.
The lights were out but for some large candles flickering in the edges of the curtained room.
"Yes! It will be fun," declared their plump hostess. "I've heard so much about her!"
Aggie sat at the head of the table. Her hooded eyes assessing the guests.
"Sit!" Aggie commanded. Ellen bristled. Carlo looked at Aggie with a lazy smile.
A chair squeeked as Marie pulled close.
"Join hands," Aggie ordered.
The couples reached awkwardly toward the person next to them.
In the quiet, the wax popped in a candle, startling Marie, who had grown quiet.
"Someone's sister wants to join us."
Ellen turned to Marie in surprise, and quickly back to Carlo, whose jaw visibly tightened.
"She has a message for the room."
Ellen closed her eyes and willed this charade to end.
"You think I've forgotten, don't you?"
Carlo moved as though to get up from the table.
"I will never forget, and neither will you, big brother."
"Let's go, Ellen!" said Carlo.
I've had enough of this freak show!"
