[Seneca Village…Chief’s long-house…]
Five in a line, the beleaguered crew sat on their knees, camel-style on the floor of the long-house in front of a warm, burning fire. On the other side of the fire, sitting on a slightly raised platform covered with animal furs sat Chief Minetoh. To his right, sat twenty warriors armed with spears. To his left, another fifteen.
Commander Galligan eyed the warriors warily as he scanned the hut. Escape would be impossible and he took a deep breath as he prepared to negotiate the Captain’s offer.
Sitting to the Chief’s right was Great Bear and sitting to his left was Little Grey Wolf, the young boy whom Galligan remembered on the Silverton, who acted as the translator.
Suddenly the Chief spoke in a deep voice, “Byeggum tao pish?!”
The young boy turned and in his best broken English conveyed the message, “Why you come?”
Galligan slowly pulled out a rolled parchment from his tunic and carefully flattened it out on the floor before answering…
“The Chief knows why we have come. We offer a grand trade!” Galligan said, glancing straight at the Chief with a steady gaze.
The young boy translated. The Chief’s pursed his lips slightly and turned and muttered something to Big Bear who nodded in agreement. Then the Chief spoke to the boy again…
“Chief remembers, you offer 6,600 ounces of silver…for what?” The boy said holding his arms out, palms up in a questioning manor.
“For grand work!” Galligan answered as he flattened out the parchment and then held it up for all to see, showing it to the Chief, then to the elders on the right and finally those on the left.
A great mumbling arose in the house and many elders slapped their legs in disbelief or possibly in jest of the preposterous work the Commander was displaying.
Having no knowledge of the plan, the four Officers accompanying Galligan leaned forward to try and see what was on the parchment, but no sooner had they done so and Galligan rolled it back up and handed it towards the Chief. With a slight hesitation, the chief took the roll and once again unrolled it, eyeing its lines and raising his eyebrows in dismay!
“I will need six hundred warriors to do the work.” Galligan said calmly.
Little Grey Wolf translated...the long-house fell eerily silent!
Warrant Officer Lupega leaned over and whispered to Lieutenant Bleujay, “Sairrr, are we not at the mercy of the Seneca? We need immediate support. The Captain senses what is happening, I'm sure, which means we are very important to him. We are not just a crew. I hope he sends us help. Diplomacy is the weapon we have…”
“Aye...deep breath mate....here we are! Stay calm....because they can smell fear...remember, we represent the Crown, the mighty Frigate 'Silverton'!” Bleujay whispered back out of the corner of her mouth.
