I applied to study Masters in Financial Engineering at Worldquant University on a dare. I didn't think the school would admit me because I had no background in finance whatsoever. But it turns out that with engineering or computer science background and a little bit of computer programming, a student can do well in Quantitative Finance or what some call Financial Engineering. Go figure.

WorldQuant Univeristy is the first tuition free, completely online Masters Degree in Quantitative Finance. There are fourteen courses in the curriculum and the courses are taken one after the other starting with Financial Markets 1. Students cannot take the next course until they have passed the previous ones. For instance, a student cannot take Statistics until she has passed Financial Markets 1 and so on.
The following is the list of courses in the curriculum.
WQU 601 Financial Markets I
WQU 603 Statistics
WQU 605 Programming in Python I
WQU 607 Algorithms I
WQU 609 Financial Markets II
WQU 611 Programming in Python II
WQU 613 Econometrics
WQU 615 Alpha Design I
WQU 617 Algorithms II
WQU 619 Risk Management
WQU 621 Alpha Design II

WQU 690 Capstone Course
Each course is tutor-led and contains more than 45 hours of learning activities with mini projects and case studies, at least one exam and a final project. One course takes about 6 weeks to complete and the program lasts for two years.
Students without a background in programming may struggle a little but a course on Python programming with Jose Portilla on Udemy helps. If a student applies herself, she can learn a great deal through the program.
