After all the recent rain I noticed that Arnold the tree from hell had some weird fungus growing on one of the cut stumps. Although it looks like cooked porridge, it is actually a fungus, perhaps a type of slime mould.

A friend agreed to come and spend a few days attacking the base with a chainsaw and pickaxe and 3 days later, this is the result:
What you see on the right corresponds to the bottom third of the picture on the left so he made substantial progress on it and a giant pile of fragments. By this time next week, I will have only a huge pile of rotten woody stuff that is fit only for compost. At least it decomposes quickly.
