So I was doing some online English tutoring and then I came upon this page from a Chinese phonics textbook meant for young children learning English. The top has a sausage, and has pronunciation practice for the words deed, need and feed. But what is going on with the mouse and the lion?!? "A friend in need is a friend indeed."
So a few details to examine... the lion and the mouse both have pained expressions and are both crying. The mouse is clearly still alive and waving its hands, but seems to be on the plate willingly. There are six wavy lines coming from the lion's stomach indicating he's hungry. He's pouring salt on the mouse and has a fork in his hand. But the worst part is the "Rhyming Fun" section which indicates that they're friends. The lion is hungry so his friend offered himself as a meal. Both characters look rather chubby, so I don't know why it's come to this. I'm just wondering who had the idea for this illustration and how this got published? How about the mouse feeds a sausage to the hungry lion? Wouldn't that work?
