The were no surprises when former SFL Champions Stirling "Braza" Futsal Club took on the newly promoted Spearwood Lions at the Pro Futsal Centre in Bibra Lake.
Braza featured a number of new signings to replace what they lost at the end of last seasons disappointing exit in the semi finals, as many had tipped them to go all the way. While they finished the regular season in fantastic fashion, beating eventual champions Fremantle and thumping runners up Cambio Cumbre, they were unable to continue that rich vein of form.
New Braza signing Ali "AK47" Khateri and Mousa "Magic Man" Al Katham have joined the ranks, and helped the likes of Victor Brauner and Adriano Martino secure the three points in their opening hitout for the season. Ali Kateri got on the score sheet on debut, and could be a valuable asset for the Brazas this season.
Mousa Alkatham also figured prominently, after stints with Murdoch, Cambio Cumbre and now Braza. He is a relentless player who runs and runs, and has a knack of finding space at the back post. A pure futsal genius.
Former Perth United and SFL top scorer Pavel Parahuzic also played his part in his third season with Braza, and once again is expected to be an integral part of the side.
The newly promoted Spearwood Lions did well enough to suggest they can avoid relegation in their first SFL season, and headed by the super experienced Sirah Sasikumar who could argue. The docile pivot was once part of a star studded Western Australian futsal establishment that included the likes of Australian representatives El Abrahams, Colombian Nestor Fonseca and Fremantle's Luke Tidy.
A lot has changed since the so called golden era of WA Futsal. But with Pro Futsal taking over everything futsal in WA, the future has never looked brighter and perhaps a return to that golden age is not far away.
