(Home Screen and Contacts for the April Fools prank)
Let it be known that all of the Shall We Date? game series made by NTT Solmare Entertainment is utter garbage. No, I’m not exaggerating with this, don’t take this as baseless slander, either.
Whether it is due to a poor crafted plot, the same defective daily-ticket system they insist on putting on ALL of their titles, the shitty characters (including the MC), the bugs, the lag or the endless adds, Shall We Date? Is a series of trash made up for people who love consuming garbage; so, if you liked the Twilight saga… I guess these are for you.
Why did I decide to give it a shot?
Last year, by the end of October, I downloaded this game because the ads in different sites were driving me insane. So, yeah, I basically rage-downloaded the game to prove it was indeed a shitty thing, then move on with my life.
Pretty much like what I did with Mystic Messenger back then in 2016, lol. Except, I had a better impression of Mysme due to the amount of memes, and because six of my friends became hooked with it and dragged me down that hell with them –thumbs up–.
My judgmental stance with Obey me!! Came from three key factors: the dumb ads, which have nothing to do with the game itself in the end; the title, because I was expecting a plotless toxic rain; and the company behind it… for all the previously stated reasons above.
Proved Wrong Almost Immediately
I had to eat every-single-one of my words, but I did so gladly.
The game proved to be even better than Mystic Messenger. Does it has plot holes? Yes, but they’re less outrageous than expected. Toxic behaviors? I wish we were totally free of them, but if you played or are playing Mysme, you’ll agree that Obey Me!!t characters are super mild in comparison. Plus, the main cast are supposed to be demons, you should expect some twisted shit- not for them to be more decent human beings than Rika and Han Jumin.
Player Experience
One of the first things one as a player notices is how much budget was allocated to the project, and Obey me!! sure had money thrown its way. When it comes down to interface, they were on pair (or even above) with Mystic Messenger right off the bat, which is no small feat considering MysMe has been around for years now.
Another pleasant surprise was the translation. Spelling mistakes are expected when translating from japanese, but we don’t get that. When a typo pops up, it’s usually intentional- when it is not, that is 100% surely because the chat features Simeon, lmao.
If you’re not feeling up to log in and check your messages and calls, they just pile up. You can see old chats in the memory box and listen to past calls whenever you want, too. That alone kicks Mysme off its pedestal (for those who aren’t aware, you had to log during specific times in Mysme, so not to miss chats and calls. Pretty inconvenient for the free players).
Hate grinding? ME TOO. I end ditching games because I find it extremely bothersome and tiring collecting items, even if they’re for my bias’ sake. It’s fun at the beginning, but it grows annoying. So imagine my surprise when I saw this game has an automatic function. I was like: BITCH, WHAT?! Once you clear an stage, you don’t have to play the whole damn battle again- it’s an option, of course. But if you are not a masochist, you just have to press a button that allows you to grind up to x5 in one go, and you can keep doing it until you run out of AP.
Another thing I like is that they give you AP for literally anything, and you can stack it up. i.e: currently, I have stacked 706 AP (take that, Fate GO). Vouchers and Tickets are relatively easy to get, too. In short, the game is very free-players friendly (a game-changer and the total opposite of what the company was doing before) and the most surprising fact is that they didn’t ruin it once VIP membership was introduced.
Since things were going… strangely well, I didn’t want to write a review about this game unless I finished the main plot. Just in case they actually ruined the only good thing they’ve ever done with an update along the way.
But it was ??? good??? for otome standards, anyway. You won’t cry or anything unless you’re oversensitive, and yes, there’s the downside that certain characters will chase after you despite you hating their guts. Yet, that’s expected given the nature of the game.
So… overall, Season 1 gets a free-pass on my good side. I have yet to check out Season 2, hope they keep up with the good work.
