Far Cry 5
Welcome back fellow Steemians, it's that time of the week again, weekend but also time for your weekly game review fix.
So it's been a while since our last game review no thanks to all the downtime due to the recent hard fork, hopefully that is all in the past and things will start looking better from here on in. I have patiently been waiting for months to review this bad boy, as this is one of my more favorable franchises. I have probably told you all all before, but the Far Cry hold a special place in my heart, it's something me and my brother Shaun just love playing together. So much so that it has now become some what of a tradition for us, very much similar to Christmas or Thanks Giving. The main reason I haven't played this until now was because I was waiting for my brother to get his hand on the game, because we play it together, even though he is on the other side of the country.
When I initially first saw the trailer of this game, i thought this would be a very political game, well with Trump and the conservatives, and I had suspicions there would be an underlying tone regarding it. We know what happens when companies decide to pick an political side and then inject their ideologies into a franchise, yes I'm referring to Star Wars. I was happily surprised that there wasn't really much of that, yes some commentary on America’s relationship with guns and the Second Amendment, but coming from a game about killing people with guns, it's rather a mute point. Other than that, the story doesn’t seem to be make any grand statement about current events or political ideologies.
Our story takes place in the fictional, Hope County, Montana in the good old USA, where a predominant preacher named Joseph Seed has become the self ordained leader of the town.
Seed believes that he has been divinely chosen by God to protect the people of Hope County from the collapse of a coming global catastrophe that will see the fall of society. Due to this he decides to established a congregation called the Project at Eden's Gate to help lead the people to salvation. However, in reality, Seed is a radical preacher and Eden's Gate is more like a militaristic doomsday cult that uses both coercion and violence to forcibly convert the people of Hope County, much like the caliphate and Spanish Inquisition have done for centuries before. Seed also uses extreme intimidation and indoctrination, as well as his very loyal militia, to keep the people from being able to contact the outside world, andthose who do not comply, don't live very long to talk about it.
Joseph has assumed the title of "the Father" and maintains control over the County with the aid of his Heralds, basically his inner circle, and these three men make sure all is done as the word of the father. They are also in charge of training the of the cult's armed soldiers, buying up most of the land in Hope County, and running the forced labour camps for residents who resist the cult. The Heralds have converted a series of decommissioned missile silos into heavily fortified bunkers where they intend to wait out the collapse with the cult's followers, to then ultimately rule what remains after.
Our story begins when the United States Marshals and the county sheriff's department decide to combine forces in a joint operation to take down Eden's Gate cult.
Deputy Marshal Cameron along with Sheriff Earl Whitehorse and his deputies Hudson, Pratt and the you, the player character, an unnamed junior deputy, all arrive at an Eden's Gate church to serve Joseph Seed with a federal arrest warrant on charges of kidnapping with the intent to harm. Seed calmly agrees to go with the officers, but warns them that God will not allow him to be taken away from his congregation, none the less he is placed under arrest and escorted away. This is when the task force is attacked by the cult, causing their helicopter to crash and allowing Joseph to escape, who then commands the cult militia to capture the task force.
The player is the only one to survive and not get captured by Eden's Gate, all thanks to the help of Dutch, who then explains that the cult has interpreted the attempt to arrest Joseph as the fulfillment of one of his prophecies. Believing the end of the world is upon them, they have begun "the Reaping", which is basically concentrated effort to purge Hope County of non-believers by any means necessary. The cult then proceed to cut completely cut off the County from the outside world including blocking any and all radio and phone communication to the outside world. The only hope is for the player to gather the small pockets of scattered resistance, and to mount an assault on the cult.

They will come. They will try to take from us. Take our guns, take our freedom. Take our faith. We will not let them. We will not let their greed, or their immorality, or their depravity hurt us anymore! There will be no more suffering!" - Joseph Seed
If you loved any of the previous Far Cry games, this will be right up you alley, taking down murderous thugs is just as fun in rural America as it is was in the Himalayas.
This series is renowned for brighter than real like environments and scenic views, it is Far Cry after all, but it just falls a little bit short of games like Horizon: Zero Dawn. I assume that this would probably run and look a whole lot better on the PS4 Pro than on the standard PlayStation. This is also the first Far Cry game where you are given a choice between one of the two genders with some light customization, all previous games you were a guy with very limited option on look. The structure of the main quest is a little different than before, in that in order to get to Joseph you need to draw out and eliminate his three main lieutenants, kind of similar to Shadow of War.
The very best part of this game is that the entire story can also be played cooperatively with a real-world friend, and that’s when Far Cry 5 achieves a whole other level of complete craziness. This makes it so much more fun than spending all that time alone, the only down side was that when it comes to missions only the host player gets credit for completing missions. I really like that the developers adopted the same crafting system from the last game and really improved on it, the grind to find that one feather or rare bear skin is a little bit easier this time round. This was a really fun game to play as they always are, and also manages to tell a serious story with some memorable characters and a powerful ending. There was even a really funny mission called a mission called Make Hope Great Again, I had a good laugh.
Far Cry 5 is an action-adventure first-person shooter video game developed by awesome people at Ubisoft Montreal, who need no introduction as I've mentioned them so many times.
But for those of you not so deep into the gaming world, Ubisoft Montreal are responsible for some of the top game titles on the market for the last few years, like the Assassin's Creed series, Watch Dogs and all the previous Far Cry games.
Published by Ubisoft for the major platforms like Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, unfortunately not available on the previous generation consoles. It is the successor to the 2014 video game Far Cry 4, and the fifth main installment in the Far Cry series and was released in March 2018.
If you are lucky you could pick this up on a deal somewhere like I did, remember it's almost Christmas time, so expect to see some really great deals coming up in the next months or two.
