The curse of the ancient pharaohs that haunts treasure hunters until their death. It is a myth that has been imagining for decades when we think of Egypt. But maybe there is something more behind it. We have examined it and you can read our findings in this Assassin's Creed Origins Curse of the Pharaohs review.
In the Curse of the Pharaohs DLC we take another jump in time, just like in the Hidden Ones DLC that came out in January. It is now four years after the end of the Hidden Ones and Bayek moves to the more southerly Upper Egypt - after all, the Egyptians follow the Nile and not the winds. There is unrest in the big city of Thebes, because there are stories that the old Pharaohs have risen to exercise their revenge on the sinful residents.
A lot of time to discover the credibility of these stories is not necessary, because Bayek has not even stepped off the boat or a mythical figure appears from scratch and starts to hack into local soldiers and unfortunate passers-by. Of course our trusted Assassin feels that his job is to find out what the hell is going on, who is responsible for it and how it can be stopped.
A noisy period
Where the Hidden Ones DLC focuses mainly on the Roman conquest of Egyptian territory, there the Curse of the Pharaohs DLC goes back to the roots of Egypt with the pharaohs and the different gods. It also goes deeper into one of the most interesting periods of Egyptian history, during the reign of the pharaoh Akhenaten and his beautiful wife Nefertiti.
The Egyptians are known for their Polytheism, worship and belief in several gods, but Akhenaten and Nefertiti tried to change that. They believed only in Aten or the solar disk and forced this religion on to the rest of the country with their revolution. That the DLC focuses on this pair creates an interesting story where you constantly wonder where will happen next mission.
Moreover, the storyline of Curse of the Pharaohs is anything but short with a duration of more than fifteen hours, it just depends on how many side missions you want to do. Just like the main story you have several times the idea that you have reached the end of the game, then the story a twist to see and find out that you have not even completed a fraction. This is clearly reflected in the increase of the maximum level with ten levels, instead of five levels of the previous DLC.
The tourist hang out in Ancient Egypt
The new areas in Upper Egypt are a pleasure to visit and view, with many locations that speak to the imagination of people who have paid attention to the history of Egypt. From the mighty city of Thebes, which has long been the capital of Egypt and where the Pharaohs have long ruled, to the beautiful and rich temples of Luxor and Karnak.
But the region is also home to the largest magnet of grave robbers: the Valley of Kings. In this dry valley, all the powerful people were buried in the old days, from high officials to the pharaohs themselves. So if you have always wanted to visit the tombs of Ramses, Tutankhamun and of course Nefertiti and Akhenaten, then you are at the right place at Curse of the Pharaohs. The valley also offers access to one of the most remarkable locations in Assassin's Creed Origins, but we will not reveal it.
New skills to play with
The aforementioned increase in the maximum level is not only a simple way to keep areas challenging, this time you are really rewarded for achieving a new level. In the Hidden Ones DLC the extra points in skills were meant to unlock unlocked skills, but new skills were added in the new DLC.
Especially in the field of bows there are some new toys for Bayek. This way Warrior Bows automatically ensure that the victim in question will bleed and Hunter Bows can shoot through shields with the new skill. Ideal for those annoying captains with their large shields. But also in the other categories new skills can be unlocked that provide interesting changes during combat.
From pillar to post
Is everything good on the Curse of the Pharaohs DLC? No, unfortunately we can not say that. We are a fan of the story, but there are pieces in the story where Bayek is very much from the box to the wall is sent or where he time and time somewhere just too late arrives. Sometimes it is fun, but if that happens fairly constantly and more often, it feels like the developer artificially lengthens the story on certain points by moving the next piece in the puzzle further and further away in front of our noses.
And although Bayek proves again what a wonderful character he is, he has a few moments that seem strange to us. When, for example, he ends up at a location where the average Egyptian and not even Assassin normally ever comes, he reacts very coolly and briefly. While the player is now looking with big eyes and disbelief.
Conclusion
But those little dots should not spoil the fun in Assassin's Creed Origins Curse of the Pharaohs. The story takes a very interesting and controversial piece of history under the microscope, has some wonderful surprises in store for the player and also brings him or her to the most beautiful places Egypt has to offer. With content that will keep you sweet for the next fifteen to twenty hours, the price tag of twenty euros is also a very nice price. At least a lot lower than a cruise along the Nile.
