Had another glorius session of Gloomhaven today. The game feels much smoother after playing a few times. The scenarios are still taking quite long to complete, I think we can speed up a little bit but play was progressing fairly smoothly today. We finished two scenarios in about five hours, a pretty decent stint of board games.
The two scenario's today were first the continuation and completion of last weeks scenario followed by our side quest out to the Chained Isle. We really got lucky on our first scenario and it ended up being quite easy. We faced off against the first boss of the campaign and thought that we were going to be in big trouble. Then we had a large amount of dumb luck that gave us enough time to take him down before things had a chance to get out of hand. The boss fight was pretty fun and I think there are going to be a lot of cool fights/mechanics as we progress through the game.
The second scenario sent us off the the Chained Isle to investigate and neutralize the source of the islands curse. This scenario really taught us the importance of a few mechanics we had mostly overlooked in our previous scenario's. The area kept us bunched together fighting for areas to move into as well as having to navigate through and around enemies along the way. This was a bit frustrating at times, especially since I mismanaged all of my movement cards and almost ended up getting left behind.
We had our first taste of character progression this week as most of us leveled up and unlocked some perks for completing mission quests. I'm honestly a bit disappointed in the character progression, I was really hoping that I'd be making more impactful decisions about my character. Instead I got access to a few new cards and unlocked a small perk.
Besides my one gripe, I'm still having lots of fun in Gloomhaven and look forward to many more games in the future.
