I think that FPS multiplayer game could do with a bit more narrative. However consider Rainbow 6 Siege there is a lore there and there is a huge following and player base that follow the Rainbow 6 Siege universe. It was further developed thanks to community engagement and acknowledgement through voice lines, cinematics, and co-op game modes.
Now consider Dark souls series with it's ambiguous lore yet it's there not holding your hand yet you find these nuggets (ummm nuggets...) of lore in which the player can find and immerse themselves into that gaming universe.
And then you got games like Bound or journeys which is a visual wonderland yet there is still an element of story.
