The latest Destiny franchise DLC has launched and has been met with a varying amount of feedback given the change to their approach of DLCs. In previous DLC, Bungie has launched them with full blown story mission that while short felt as separate stories from the core game. However, in the latest DLC, Black Armory, they have changed the approach to a more time-based approach with quests rather than missions. While they have been somewhat transparent about the expectations of the content to be deployed across the next couple of weeks instead at one point in time, many players have been disappointed by the depth of the content as the lore is missing from the in-game content being seen as part of the quests provided.
The latest DLC starts with a quest to participate in new public-type events in the space already present in the game. After completion, an arena type game mode is unlocked called the Forge which is also a horde like game mode to unlock new weapons via forging and crafting weapons from the Black Armory. Although new, some have seemed to be less than impressive. Some of the benefits seen from the weapons is that they have added another Machine Gun and these have random rolls to their features which adds to the chase of finding one that suits the players style of play.
Another item that did surprise the community was the launch of a new raid space. Many thought that is would take place in the Dreaming City given the vast space but once teased, it was seen that it would actually take place in an all new space created for the new activity. I have yet to experience it to avoid spoiling the surprise but have heard that the new DLC was saved due to this activity alone. The raids from Destiny are always engaging and fun to play when you have a group of players to play with. I imagine it will take me a couple of weeks to be able to experience it as the power level has also increased which has made these activities more difficult for players without teams. I have yet to beat the Forge as I am still too low a level to defeat the enemies easily. However, at least it gives me something to chase once again in the game I enjoy.
The plan is set for Bungie to deploy additional content over the coming weeks, including new Forges and the return of The Dawning seasonal event. In fact, once the first raid team beat the latest Raid, a new Forge has already become available. It is interesting to see Bungie change its strategy of deploying content in a structured approach. I normally prefer to be given it all and explore at my availability but I know that more of the community has want a never-ending stream of content and this approach may help attend those requests. While I hope this improves the experience, I must admit that I have not been too excited about the experience but time will tell.
Thanks!
