Subnautica was one of my favorite games of 2018. and for a good reason. The sense of Lovecraftian dread, the fear of the unknown, constant fear of getting drowned and eaten by the huge sea animals in what seemed a peaceful and beautiful world, it had a great sense of progression once you started crafting advanced technology and exploring deeper and more dangerous biomes, subnautica truly had immersion worth experiencing.
Subnautica Below Zero takes us on another alien ice planet where alien precursor ruins were found one year after the event of the original game, but before you go any further, take care spoilers incoming. We play as another character who happens to be in the center of a new disaster when your science station got destroyed by the avalanche. Surviving in ice cold conditions where you are at the bottom of the food chain is your main objective.
Below Zero just like it's predecessor is in early access phase meaning it is not yet finished, the story is not finished, biomes are not finished, but you can craft almost everything and still experience few new finished biomes and interact with new awesome looking species that have a lot of fun new interactions, like this cheeky Sea Monkey who stole my Sea Glider.
First of all graphics are updated and look absolutely gorgeous, new sea creatures are more dangerous than ever, new biomes give you that uneasy feeling when exploring them. There are new tech items you can craft like a howercraft that you can use while traveling on the land. I also love the new sub called Sea Truck, a modular submarine that you can customize with different compartments, residential, storage, aquarium etc. It's a fun new way to travel protected in these dangerous waters. I got to say the new leviathans are also very nicely done, not as scary like Reaper Leviathan from the original though, but there will be more dangerous leviathans down the road.
Even though this game is far from finished I still enjoyed playing this early access version. I have a big feeling this will be another hit game when it fully launches, I'll be the first one reporting the findings right here on Steem.
