I play MMO games a lot and it used to be in control, but lately as I wasn't doing well, it overtook my life. I'm not trying to quit it completely, because it's still fun for me and I have meaningful relationships that are centered around this game, but I do agree if it's hinderance to you, you should consider taking a break. For myself, I'm going to visit family for a long weekend and I will not be bringing my console for this reason, to have a break and focus on other things.
Personally I try to avoid everything super competitive and what I like to call "pew pew games", because I know myself to be competitive and I don't want that toxicity to become a habit.
However, as I took away time from gaming for awhile, I found that while I was getting a lot done, I was miserable and overworking myself, because (for better or worse), gaming is my main de-stress activity.
It's not a life and death decision tbh. If you think gaming isn't a good use of your time then just quit. With that said, don't leave yourself without a way to relax as you'll probably lose the plot.
You can also take a break for a few months if you can't handle it.
It's what I am doing.
There are a lot of goals I have in mind, including having a decent amount of money saved up. Once those goals are achieved, hopefully I'll allow myself to game for a couple of weeks, and then probably take another break, Idk. In the future I hope I don't have to restrict it so much.
