So what happens in the game Soma is.....
The protagonist named Simon Jarret gets his brain damaged in a car accident. Later on he goes to a neurologist for possible treatment or recovery
The Dr says that he's doing a research by which people who have less time of their life remaining because of head injury or smth they would be able to live for years or even dacades
He asks Simon if he can take a scan of his brain, which would help him make possible treatment for his injury
If it applies to the scan, it should also work on his actual brain
Simon agrees and we, the player, sits in chair with sort of helmet on and have a scan. The moment we wake up from the scan, after barely a second we are no longer in the clinic of that doctor but we are in a ship underwater, later discovered by Simon as some research facility
Simon gets in contact with a women over a radio station in the ship and she tells him to come to her and she'll tell him everything
On the way he discovers that the year is 2113 and not 2013 when he went to the doctor's clinic
Turns out he died after about 1 month of getting the scan. And this Simon who just woke up in a ship after getting the scan is actually that scanned conciousness of Simon

Later on when he meets with the woman whom he contacted on the radio he discovers that the woman is not actually a human but a copy of a human, just like him, installed in a robotic body.
And he also is installed in a body of another human, not himself, which worked on the research station
And a comet hit the Earth and erased the surface and all the humans on the surface died except a few who were working deep underwater in the research center
Oh actually they're not humans, they all are just the conciousness of those humans installed in robotic bodies
Anyway they created a project, when they were human, named ARK, an artificial reality in which they would install conciousness from all the scans they have, mostly of the crews working in the research center and launch it into space, as the conditions on earth have become unwelcome for the ARK computer to survive, for some reasons
But even though they made the ARK, they couldn't launch it into space as the launching site was very deep underwater and the place had lethal creatures which killed the crew which went for it's launch
So the woman, named Catherine, who Simon met from the radio tells Simon that this is the only way what's left of humans can survive, as all of the humans are dead from the comet
Simon and Catherine go to some extreme horrors and there comes a point when Simon has to take a suit to be able to survive the high pressure in the that deep place where ARK's launch site is located
But there's only one suit left which is already being wore by a dead body. The suit can't be taken off from the body. So there's only one way Simon can go down at the launch site. By transferring his conciousness in the dead body

So Catherine tells Simon to sit in a pilot seat , just like the one at the clinic of that neurologist, so that she'd be able to scan his brain
Simon sits in it and now he knows it wouldn't be horrible or painful as it wasn't last time
So he's having the scan and he's talking to Catherine while having it. And all of a sudden the camera (in the game) shifts to the dead body and now Simon's conciousness is in the body which is wearing the suits
Oh here comes the good part now
But when Simon wakes up in the new body he sees himself sitting on the chair talking to Catherine who instantly gets silenced when Catherine notices that the other Simon has woken up
Simon asks Catherine what would happen to that Simon. Was he alive. Catherine tells him that he just had a copy of his brain scan and and pasted in another body. It's not like his sole conciousness was transferred into another body. So yes he was alive and still is. He's just been sent to sleep.
Simon starts yelling that noooo I can't leave him like that. Even if I will get on the ARK, which is a reality too but a sort of utopia btw, and sent to space, when this Simon would wake up he'd still be in this horrible place with these creatures around
Catherine tells him it's his choice if he wants to kill the previous Simon or not. She gives him a sort of button which if he'd would press would stop that Simon's breathing
I chose to kill him but you can leave him alive and make your way to the ARK.
Anyway now he has the suit and now he can go deeper in the water and reach the launch site for ARK
There's a long sequence in which he runs from those creatures, which is very horrifying, but finally reaches the launch site
Now Catherine tells him that he has only two things left to do
Start the protocol for ARK's launch and install his and Catherine conciousness into ARK so they'd be living happily into the utopia in ARK
