I proudly present you the man that made me become the Youtube addict that I am today. For the past 5 years his videos have been my most anticipated. His humor is kind of special and it takes some time to get into it, angry sarcasm with a decent portion of trolling might also not be everybody's cup of tea.
Dunkey recently had a 2 hour Podcast with H3H3 and while I am thankful for 2 hours of Dunkey time, it made me realize what I dislike about Ethan so much. Most of his questions were pretty shallow and it seemed like he only watched the most popular dunkey videos as preparation for this interview. He literally asked him to explain a joke to him... what kind of comedian explains his jokes?
Dunkey handled it quite excellent by giving a dry empiric commentary, he is usually not that funny live as you can see in the rest of the H3H3 Podcast, he is most of the time just chuckling and giving short answers. He scripts most of his videos like he explained in his classic behind the dunk.
In the 2nd part he demonstrates what not do. Don't just auto edit or some bs, edit your video by hand and spend some time on the process. Movie Maker is actually a good free starting tool to do that, Dunkey does use Adobe though. Don't convolute your video with pre-made effects and audio.
Dunkey Musical Comedy
One of my favorite type of dunkey videos are his music videos. The music itself is quite mediocre, but paired with dunkeys humor and editing they are quite enjoyable.
It is funny how he is dissing Sky Williams in the last video, even though those two are good friends. He even memed about it later when he and Sky would get in a fight while playing League "don't make me do another Rap video!". Battle Rap always meant to shoe that you can talk shit about someone without genuinely hating them, but that is a topic on it's own.
Why Dunkey actually quit League
The question was not really answered in the H3H3 podcast. Dunkey mentioned that he is bad at the game and that is definitely part of it. His 2nd last Video was him getting manhandled by most other League Streamers 1v1, he had to do a lot of editing to make it look like an even battle.
And honestly why the fuck would you max q on Teemo and harass with it? You max e and use q as soon as they try to melee you, that is basic stuff...
And because everybody like me is such a sucker for actually high skilled gameplay that made him feel like he does not belong. He actually made a lot of his compilations were he outplays people 1v5 in custom games with very low skilled subscribers, there were rumors that dunkey would kick people from the invite list if they played too good against him. So yeah, I am not sure how much Dunkey actually enjoyed making some of his highlight reels.
However a huge reason for him to stay out of the game was the huge community backlash when he started playing the game again! Here is a re-upload of the Video that Dunkey delisted from his channel. I remember it having originally a 50% dislike ratio or some bullshit.
I might be a little biased because I actually predicted him coming back to League. He even talked about all the pressure and struggle he had climbing to Diamond Rank and that Riot temporally banning him, was just the catalyser that made him make a very ranty "I am done with League" video. Every League player hates the game and quits at some point, but you usually come back. It is part of the game to get tilted af.
To the point of that there is no more dunkey-style League tuber out there. I have recently discovered Lone Coyote who makes also videos that are often in customs with bad players but through time consuming editing he makes really awesome videos out of it.
Dunkey is comedian, not game critic!
Dunkey lately seems to focus on rating new games and while I like him showing new games and doing funny shit in them, I don't think Dunkey's strength is his vast game knowledge, but his humor.
He is also a fan of jump and runs and story driven games, while I am an old school strategy, tactic, turn-based RPG Nazi, so I don't really value his recommendations a lot. I bought Jazz Punk because of him and it was the most linear generic crap, a little trippy yes, but almost all "easter eggs" were covered in Dunkeys 5 minute video, that should tell you something about the game.
As long as Dunkey does not lose his unique humor I think I will love everything he does, if it is only some game critic like any other, but with dunkey humor, then I am cool with that, but I think Dunkey is capable of so much more.
