A frustrating little project - the herb garden has now been refreshed. This little garden was here when I bought the house and at the time was overflowing with geraniums. There's been nothing in it at all for at least the last 10 years, aside from weeds. It's just edged with mismatched rocks, bits of old drainage works, and the odd piece of terracotta pot.
It took quite a while to dig it out. I wasn't expecting the dirt to be so compacted, or for there to be so many little stones. It was also difficult to use the digging tools and not hit the wall.
It needed some garden edging for the back of the bed. Previously the soil had been right up against the wooden house battens and the bottom of them had rotted. I wanted to leave a gap between the soil and the battens to avoid this getting worse. I had a vision of how this might look, but unfortunately so many gardening supplies are sold out in the stores right now. I managed to find some recycled black plastic edging that slides together. It's not the best, but was inexpensive and works for now.
Future plans would be to dig out the big rocks and concrete and edge it properly - extending all the way to the edge of the house. For now I'm just trying to tidy everything up and take advantage of the spring weather to get as many plants in as possible.
I mixed some compost and a bag of mushroom compost into the soil to revitalise it. It's planted with sweet basil sprouts, plus an extra broad bean that was otherwise destined for the compost bin. There's a couple of marigolds at the tap end as well and I've sown flower seeds along the front in the hope that they'll attract more bees.
I'm hoping it does well as a herb garden. It gets sun from early morning until about 1pm, then is in shade so will avoid the extreme summer afternoon heat.
Until next time,
@Sammie
