I swear these Runner Ducks are absolutely ridiculous! May apple trees started from seeds that my son brought home from his sack lunch Mama Splatts packed for him. We put them in half wine barrels in hopes of one day having some property. Well, time flew by and I need to get one of these trees planted in the ground. I’m hoping it will start to grow a little better.
Back in the garden/duck area I started to dig a hole for the tree. There were tons of worms in the soil I dug up. So I picked them out and tossed them to my Runner Ducks. They love worms. Then I turn my back for just a second and here they are…
As I walk up they run off and I continue digging. Throwing them worms as I find them. Again, I walk away for just a moment and our Drake Runner duck is in the hole and battling to get out.
Anyway, we have 5 apple trees, an apricot tree and a blueberry bush, plus lots of strawberry plants and a Marion blackberry bush. These trees need to get in the ground but I don’t want to lose them if and when we find some acreage.
After beating on the side of the half wine barrel, the apple tree and root ball slid out. I tipped the barre on its side and slid it into the hole.
After straightening the tree up I back filled it with dirt and gave it a good drink of water. I didn’t pack the soil around the root ball, I used the water to get the soil down along the side of it.
Of course the ducks got in and played in the muddy water. I swear, anytime there is a puddle of water they are in it.
My apricot tree needs planted in the ground big time. It has produced fruit but they never ripen. We get a few green apricots, then they are gone.
I chopped our Marion Blackberry bush down to nothing. Now it is coming back nicely.
The strawberries are coming in thick!!!
Hopefully I can find a good spot for the apricot tree. I know they get messy so… hmmm…. I grew up with one in the back yard and man I sure did love chowing down on those apricots. We used to split them open, pull the seed out, and put them in the microwave for 10 seconds… weird but tasty!!!
Last year the garden got neglected really bad due to certain life issues. Hopefully we will have a good thriving garden this year. CRAP!! I gotta transplant the raspberries too…. Add that to the To-Do lost…
