Hello, steemians, and welcome to my garden, eh!
My last full garden update was about 2 weeks ago, so I thought it was time to do another update post.
The popcorn is doing pretty well right now, we had some heavy rain last week that helped it grow a bit. half the corn patch is still in need of serious weeding, but that doesn't seem to be bothering the corn much.
The other side of the corn patch. This side doesn't seem to be as fertile as the other side. The difference in the corn growth is fairly obvious. I've been doing a lot of weeding on this side and working my way across. I covered some of this side with old straw but I didn't have enough to do the entire corn patch.
The green beans seem to be growing well enough in this raised bed. I made this bed last year so it's relatively new. There's a potato plant growing in the raised bed from the compost bin at the end of the bed.
I think the carrots are doing pretty well this year. I didn't have as good of a germination rate as I was hoping for, but the plants that came up are doing well. I've been trying to keep up with pulling the weeds in this bed, so it looks pretty good. I'd like to have some mulch to cover the dirt between the rows, but I don't have any right now.
This is the yellow potato section. As I talked about in a previous post, I had to replant about 2/3s of the Yukon Gold potatoes this year because they never came up. That's the first time I've ever had a problem with Yukon Gold seed potatoes. I don't know what happened, but they rotted in the ground instead of growing. The patch looks a bit sparse because of that. As you can see, I was watering the potatoes at the time I took this picture.
My red potato section is separate from the main garden area, it's in the side yard. We've been using this area for garden space for several years now and it gets a bit better each year as we add stuff to it. I planted the red potatoes in May and they're doing really well. The 2 shorter rows were planted a week later than the 2 taller rows, and I used sprouty potatoes from last year to plant the second 2 rows. They seem to be doing as well as the store bought seed potatoes in the taller rows, considering the time difference between planting them. There's also a row of black oil sunflowers along the left edge of the garden in the picture. Some are growing well, some not as well.
The little corner bed started out as unused space, I had been using the space for piling extra dirt. I used most of it this spring to build a new raised bed, so I had extra space. I used it to plant some zucchini plants and yellow summer squash. They seem to be doing well, I just have to remember to give them water fairly regularly. I also have my rosemary and sage plants in this area now. I also started a new compost pile here with old leaves raked up from the back yard in the spring.
My newest raised bed with tomato plants. The plants are all doing well, they're different sizes because some of them were started later than others.
My container garden seems to be doing well also. I'm enjoying this experiment to see how well garden plants will grow in containers. This is the second year that I've planted yellow wax beans in containers. Last year they grew well and I got a pretty good amount of beans from the plants, so I'm doing it again. I also have 5 home made self watering buckets that I'm growing various things in. I have a yellow sweet banana pepper plant in 2 of the buckets, 2 buckets with cucumber plants, and a cherry tomato plant in the last one. I also moved my Early Girl tomato plant out of the greenhouse to the container garden today. It's big enough that it was getting in the way in the greenhouse. That, and it's full of whiteflies. I still have to figure out how to get rid of them.
Here's another look at the container garden. It's in front of the new raised bed and behind the strawberry bed.
Well, that's a look at my garden at home for this week. I'll be doing an update on the greenhouse, and on my community garden plot soon.
That's all I have for this post, I hope you found it interesting!
