Hello, steem people! Welcome to my page, eh!
It's been about a week and a half since I wrote my last garden update, so I figured it was about time to write another one, just in case you're curious about how my garden is doing.
Now that we're well into the hot weather, the corn and tomatoes are growing strong, and the potato plants seem to like it also. Let's take a look at the garden.
This is the side garden corn patch, it's doing really well right now. The grass is starting to get a bit out of hand between the rows of corn, but it's been so hot, I haven't had the ambition to do much weeding in this garden area.
I planted some pole beans between the corn a couple of weeks ago, they're doing pretty well now that they're up and growing.
Here's a wide shot of the main garden. In the background, you can see that the water tank surround is being painted the same color as the house, kind of a mustard yellow. The fence pickets around the water tank help protect it from the UV of the sun, and also make it look better than if it was just the tank sitting there on the stand.
My outdoor tomato plants in the raised bed are doing well now, with the hot weather. There's even a few small tomatoes started on the plants. I really need to do some trimming of the suckers on these plants, they're getting too bushy. All leaves and not so much tomatoes if you just let them go feral.
My long row of Goldrush Russet potatoes. It runs the full length of the garden.
My summer squash plants are finally growing well. I bought plants this year and planted them late. It took a while for them to get past the transplant shock, especially the yellow squash plants. I'm starting to see a few tiny yellow squash and a few tiny zucchinis now.
Here's the main potato patch. There's weeds in there, but you can't see most of them because the potato plants are so thick now. Most of the weeds are purslane, an edible weed that I don't know anything about preparing. You can see all the purslane that I pulled out of that first row of potatoes before I hilled them up.
The container garden green beans are doing really well for the most part, as are the yellow beans in the raised bed behind the containers. They're all starting to put out flowers now.
I've been picking yellow cherry tomatoes off the plant for a week now, they're quite sweet and tasty! I have 2 more tomato plants that I wasn't going to put in big pots because I already have too many tomato plants, but there they are in bigger pots. These are Roma tomato plants, so they probably won't get real big anyway. Also, the potatoes in the containers are growing, although only 1 plant is getting big so far. These are left over blue potatoes from the ones that I planted at the community garden. The burgandy pot on the end has some kind of mint in it. It was growing around the edge of the house for many years, I dug out some of it and put it in the pot to grow. Mint is invasive, so if you don't want it everywhere, you have to grow it in containers. The strawberry plants in front of the containers have been yielding strawberries quite nicely for at least a week and a half now. The patch is fairly small, so I don't get a large amount of strawberries, but enough to do a few things with.
My sad little tomato plant that is part of the pond filter, sort of an aquaponics experiment. It is growing now and has a couple of small tomatoes on it, so it's not a failure at least. :-)
Here's a look into the greenhouse. The tomato plants are growing like crazy in there! Lots of green tomatoes right now!
I'm going to write a separate post about the greenhouse this week to show some close ups of what's happening in there.
That's all I have for this garden update post, thanks for stopping by to check it out!
