Hello, and welcome to my greenhouse!
I was out in the greenhouse last weekend tending to my tomato plant starts and I decided that I should repot some of the bigger plants into larger pots to give them more root space. As I was thinking about doing that, it occurred to me that I might as well just put the greenhouse tomato plants into the big greenhouse pots instead of just putting them into slightly larger pots.
The Amish Paste tomato plants are the only plants that are large enough to need to be repotted, the Roma plants are still really small due to having to start new seeds after some of the first plants didn't live. Of course, the largest tomato plants that I have are the ones that I'm going to plant outside in about a week, once the frost danger is done.
I started with the largest Amish Paste plant on Saturday. I only had enough mixed potting soil to fill 1 pot, so that's all I got done on Saturday.
It was rainy on Sunday, so I stayed in the house and waited until Monday to continue the work in the greenhouse. It's not that I'd get wet in the greenhouse, but I'd get wet on the way to and from the greenhouse, so that was a usable excuse to stay in the house.
On Monday afternoon, I got started on mixing the new potting soil with old soil from the pots so that I could refill the pots with better soil and get more planting done. One of these days I'm going to buy a small electric powered cement mixer so that I don't have to mix all this soil by hand. Mixing by hand takes a lot of time.
I mixed enough soil for each big pot and then planted a tomato plant in the pot. I also planted marigold plants in each pot when I planted the tomato plant. The marigolds are supposed to help with bug control.
I finally got 5 of the Amish Paste plants planted. I have 6 plants, so I'll probably bring another big pot into the greenhouse for it. I have 10 big pots across the front of the greenhouse, but I want to put Roma plants in the other 5 pots.
I have 5 Better Boy hybrid plants that I started from seeds, these plants are doing really well so far. These plants will be going out in the garden in another week or so. I decided to plant this variety this year because they have disease resistance that a lot of heirloom plants lack.
I also have 3 Black Krim heirloom tomato plants that will be going out in the garden when the frost danger is over. I also started these plants from seeds. These plants are the biggest plants that I have, even though they were started at the same time as the others. I had to take them off the heat wall today. It was sunny all afternoon, and they were getting too hot.
Considering the small size of the Roma tomato plants that I have right now, I'm considering going to the local veggi plant retailers to see if I can get a few Roma plants that are well started. If I can find 2 or 3 plants, that will be enough to take care of what I want to plant this year.
Well, I guess that's all I have for this post. Thanks for stopping by to check it out!
