Hello, hivers! Welcome to my garden!
So, today is the first of June. It kind of snuck up on me sooner than I expected. I decided to take a walk around the garden today to get some pictures of the garden at the beginning of the summer growing season.
I'd like to start this show and tell with a look at my blueberry bushes. I had to replace one of the 4 bushes because a rabbit got to one of them last winter and ate it down to just a stub. The other 3 bushes didn't bloom this year, but they're growing nicely.
This bush is a bit crowded by the irises.
This is the replacement for the one that got eaten down, it's still pretty small.
Here's a better look at the irises, with the blueberry bushes in the raised bed beyond the flowers. The tree trunk is one of our 2 apple trees.
Now for the garden.
This is the corn patch for this year. Last year, I grew red potatoes in this plot. Most of the corn seeds came up, a few had to be replanted. This is another type of heirloom field corn that we're trying this year. It's an old type of white corn.
The carrots are continuing to do well. I still need to do a bit of thinning so I'll get bigger carrots.
The green beans I planted in the raised bed are mostly up now. A few are missing, if they don't come up in the next day or 2, I'll put some new seeds into the empty spaces. The plants are bush type, I use the short tomato cages to help hold the plants up when they get big so that they don't fall over and leave the beans in the dirt. The short fence around the edges of the raised bed keeps the cats out of the bed.
The tomato plants that I put out early seem to be doing well right now.
I started planting the rest of my tomato plants into the garden today. I only got 3 plants put in, but it's a start. I only had 2 of the tomato craters left to use, so I used them. These 3 plants are Amana Orange plants, a medium size "beefsteak" type.
Now for the container garden.
Most of the big pots in the container garden were planted with bush type green beans, 5 seeds per pot. Most of them have come up. I seem to be missing 1 plant in each pot, but I can put new seeds in the empty spots if they don't come up. You can see the flowers on the strawberry plants next to the containers.
At the end closest to the greenhouse, I planted a cherry tomato plant in the pot. Cherry tomatoes seem to do well in big pots, they make good porch plants. The empty pot is a bit too small for tomato plants, but I might plant several of the marigolds in it eventually.
There's a few volunteer potato plants coming up in random places in the main garden, growing from potatoes I missed when I dug them last fall. They're still very small and hard to get a picture of, so I don't have any pictures of them.
