Hello, steemians, and welcome to my garden, eh!
I finally got around to planting my last raised bed today. I planted 2 rows of bush green beans in the bed. This bed is not very long, but it's enough for the beans that I would want to pick and use. The first thing I had to do was finish cleaning all the weeds out of it and get the dirt loosened up a bit.
The raised bed is the one in the back of this picture. I had old straw on it all winter and it was a mess when I started on it. The garden bed in front of it is where the popcorn was planted this year.
This was the beginning of the week. I had gotten all the stuff out of the raised bed, but I hadn't started getting it ready to plant yet. My little compost pile is on the end of the bed by the water tank.
There was a bit of space at the end of the bed that was not really usable but wasn't part of the compost pile, so I moved the compost pile to the very end of the bed, and then took my cultivating tool to the dirt to pull the weeds and and get it loosened up.
Then I planted the beans. These are bush type beans so you don't need a trellis for them, but I find that if you use something to hold the plants up with, you have fewer beans laying in the dirt and getting chewed on by the slugs. The supports used to be a few fold up tomato cages that I modified a couple of years ago for growing peas. It's a bit hard to see the wire supports in the picture.
In other garden news, a lot of the popcorn is up now.
I've also been working on my container garden over the past week, I have 4 big planter pots planted with yellow wax beans now. The 2 bigger pots have 7 seeds each and the 2 smaller pots have 4 seeds each.
This was pretty successful for me last year with the 2 bigger pots, so I'm doing a few more plants this way this year. I use the tomato cages to help hold up the plants so the wind doesn't blow them over. One of the things I like about picking yellow beans is that they're easy to see on the plants. I still have a few more containers to plant this year, as soon as I finish cleaning up the spot where I'm going to put them, next to the ones I've already planted.
The container garden is right in front of the new raised bed that I talked about in my last post. If you would like to read that post, here is the link for it.
