This was a first for us, but on our quest of becoming more self-sufficient and knowing where our food comes from we setup a small indoor grow light table to try and grow some greens over the winter!
I saw a lot of posts online about using shelving for this type of thing, but we had the table laying around so we decided to use that. For the light fixtures, they are standard shop lights that I picked up at Home Depot and in each fixture I have a warm and a cool fluorescent bulb in there. The total cost of this project was right around $45, not too bad if you ask me!
I already have some greens started and germinating so it is really excited! I have lettuce, arugula, and spinach that as already come up and I'm just waiting on the cilantro to break through!
So far I've done all of this with a heat mat, which I still plan on purchasing to help increase germination rates. I'm pretty exciting about the results thus far!
The plan is to also use this setup as our seeding starter station for the garden come Spring time, trying to work out the kinks now so that we have some great strong seedlings to transplant after the last frost.
I'll keep you updated on how this works out, but let me know if you any questions or comments below!
