After 21 years I decided to decrease the size of one of my front garden beds along the front of the house. The Alberta Spruce had grown to about 6 foot in diameter and were reaching my 2nd story windows. They were starting to show their age too with dying branches and a lot of rust taking over on the needles.
We took them all out along with all the other plants and took about 5 foot off the outer edge to reduce the amount of work in that bed. Of course, we had to remove all the rocks and dig out the dirt to level it with the ground. That was quite a chore in itself. We also removed the 4' wide garden that ran the length of the sidewalk. We used to have a large Redbud tree there, but a borer killed it off. All the plants that were there were mainly shade plants. They all had to move to one of the shade gardens, as they were burning out due to the Southern exposure.
After all the work was done to rebuild the rock wall and enrich the soil we planted a small global Arborvitae. We kept the small shrubs and gave them a severe trimming to shape them up a bit. Now, it was time to place the annual flowers to give some color to the bed for the summer. I planted bright, pink Geraniums, Red Salvia and Calendula flowers all along the edge. Behind the flowers, I did a grouping of Cana bulbs to give some much-needed height to the garden. Below are a few photos of the progress.
Keep an eye out for upcoming posts on all my garden beds from spring to fall. I will be giving you a thorough peek into my personal paradise, one garden at a time. Happy Wednesday everyone.
Until next time, this is Sunscape...
