If you are a gardener or grower of any sort, you should post your #gardenjournal with the other green thumbs here. If you do that, you might also want to hit up this post (@gardenhive/have-you-got-your-hive-garden-footer) to get your very own footer banner for your garden journal!
I can procrastinate no more as this is Victoria Day weekend with an extra day to get the garden ready for planting.
On the Last Episode
Last week, things were looking pretty bleak. Much of the dead stuff had been chopped out but garden boxes to rebuild, logs to move and soil to be tilled & prepared.
Since then we have assembled the planting pots, removed a few logs from the lawn and done some garden box weeding. Now for the heavy stuff.
The sky was not so friendly looking for our work and the temperatures were a cool, breezy 15 Celsius. Would it be too chilly to work comfortably or would the lack of sun help me not to burst into flames?
First up was some repair of the pepper box. A new post and we are back in business another year or 2. I will eventually have to replace all of these boxes as wood rots but I try and get a couple more out of them until I can get into a more permanent solution.
A couple hours later, I have all of the soil tilled by shovel, some new topsoil on the strawberry patch, and my
I seem to be accumulating deck and hanging planters. I like to collect all the soil in a pile, mix it with garden soil and black earth and get a fresh pot for each of these. What will go in them? A mix of flowers, extra veggies I just can't help but purchase, and all the goodies I get from the end of the season clearance sale. Apparently, I will also be growing pumpkins from some jackolantern seeds saved by my little one.
Early Blooms
After all the hard work, I took a break to enjoy the perennial blooms that are celebrating the spring. I am not sure what these are because they were planted before I bought the house but they might be Azaleas? Either way, they sure look pretty in the rain.
This year looks to be an on year for the lilac tree on the side of the house. Once they fully bloom and the side window is left open because of the heat, the smell makes it into the house when there is a breeze and that is something special.
Another nice perennial gift that keeps on giving are the peonies in the front yard. They are only firm round balls right now but another week or so and we will have an explosion of dark pink which guides us into summer then disappears.
The clean up is still in motion and I have a dump run on tap for tomorrow for all the bags of dead stull and branches trimmer from the trees. Some plastic to go into landfill unfortunately and a lawnmowers that needs to go out to pasture. Still great progress all procrastinated into 1 full day.
At the end of the day, the boxes were repaired, soil tilled, cleanup done, lawn mowed and all the triple mix lugged to the garden where it will be the bed for seedlings. Next edition will probably be a visit to the nursery for some shopping, a day of planting and then we wait! Lots of work but time well spent for a season of growing veggies and flowers.
Cheers to all the Hive Gardeners wrapping up their season or ready to plant their gardens like me.
This is the second chapter of the 7th season of the Pickleman Family Garden. Almost ready to plant for a long warm season with 1 less tree to block the sunlight.
Mom started me along my path of growing stuff when I was a kid. Motivated by so many blockchain blogging gardeners, I figured I would plant and share and learn as I reclaim as much grass space as I can. It has turned out to be a fruitful experience and I hope to inspire you to sow and grow no matter what your location or experience level is.
