You read that right - NBCNews.com reports that every member of the city council in Palm Springs, CA identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community.
The image above shows Lisa Middleton (left) and Christy Holstege whose victories for two open city council seats helped turn the entire city council queer. Middleton is transgender and Holstege identifies as bisexual.
Palm Springs has long been a haven for the LGBTQ community, with its first openly gay council member elected to office back in 1995. Today, Palm Springs ranks first in California and third in the nation (at the time of this writing) for the number of same sex couples per capita.
Despite this victory for the LGBTQ community, statistics gathered by the Victory Institute show that, although 4% of the American population identifies as LGBTQ, members of the LGBTQ community only make up .1% of elected officials across the country.
It's okay to celebrate this amazing victory, but let us not become complacent - the fight for equality rages on.
Stay queer bitches.
