Safari park project director and deputy forest conservator Shamsul Azam disclosed this to Prothom Alo. “There are now seven elephants, including the calf, at the safari park. We are yet to identify whether the calf is male or female.”
Mukti Rani was born in Bandarban in 1971 and grew up there. She has given birth to the baby after 18 months of pregnancy.
The mahout, who takes care of Mukti, said, “She [Mukti] has given birth to calves before.”
Safari park’s wild life inspector Md Sarwar Hossain Khan said, “Mukti Rani gave birth to the calf in the park’s jungle. The calf has started to walk after around two hours of its birth, but the visitors can’t see it just now. The authorities will decide about what is to be done
Jahangirnagar University’s zoology department teacher, professor Monirul Khan said, “The calf should not be brought out in public for around three months. New elephants shouldn’t be included in the herd now.”
