After holding the lockbox for a while you get a creepy feeling you are messing with something that has powers beyond your understanding. While you do not believe in the supernatural if there was going to be a life-changing moment that swayed your opinion on the matter this would almost be one of them.
You decided to leave the lockbox where you found it in the middle of the room. Since there was nothing else in this room you decided to walk back into the main entryway. You don’t quite recall the walk into the dark room being so exhausting as walking out of it was.
By the time you make it back into the main entryway you have lost any energy you had remaining to explore further parts of the house. You notice the door is wide open so you decided to see why.
Once you make it to the door you notice the rental car you had was sitting out there. It was on with the radio blazing one of your all-time favorite songs. You start to jam out to the music and get into the car.
You drive out of the forest before the song even ended. You never questioned once how quick that happened despite it taking over a full tank of gas to make it out that far.
The small town you are in now has a single motel with only the M and the E lit up on the sign. You decided to check to see if they have any vacancies for the night before as you don’t feel like sleeping in the car.
After walking into the motel you tap the call bell a few times to see if there are any staff still awake and willing to rent out a room for a few hours. An old man slowly gets up from a back room that had the television tuned to the local news that was talking about over 90 people have gone missing this year.
Without even saying a word the old man calls you by your name and says the room has been ready for hours. He hopes you enjoy the rest of the evening and reminds you that checkout is before two ducks cross the road into the parking lot.
He likes to spend the afternoon feeding the ducks that come by once a week. So if you could please check out by that time otherwise he will miss out on his time spent with Maximums and Lucy and will have to wait another week.
Being as tired as you are you did not question a thing. You accepted the old fashion key he handed you for the door to the room. It looked like the kind that would be used to lock cemetery gates back in the early 1900s.
As you fall asleep on a mattress that was as lumpy as a tuna fish sandwich. Your mind wonders briefly what the guy meant by the ducks and your room has been ready for hours.
You then dreamed for a few hours about finding some lockbox that no one is supposed to open. You had found a key to that lockbox upstairs in a random room. After opening that lockbox you agreed that was a bad idea.
What happened when you opened the lockbox remains a mystery. The memories of it faded away like a back dream once you awoken a few hours later.
It was your mother screaming at you that you were going to be late again for school. You had an English test in 5th grade today. It must have been what you were having nightmares about.
You thought to yourself it must suck being an adult with bills to pay, bad online discounts to cabins you can never find. Along with cars running out of gas. Finally, finding creepy old houses left abandoned that had boxes in them that the world should never know about. How dreadful it must be being old.
A few hours later you are in the middle of taking that English test. Your mind draws a black on almost every single question asked. You could not even remember what you had for breakfast.
The only question you did answer was fill in the blank. You simply wrote down Forbidden Lockbox as an answer.
Later that day the English teacher would call up your parents informing them that you have been daydreaming again in her class. You had written the strangest thing as one of the answers and left everything else blank.
Start over from the beginning if you dare or accept this as the ending leaving the lockbox behind forever.
