There are many illegal cults or secret societies on the campuses of Nigerian universities. They pose a major threat to academic programmes because some students become caught up in violence and crime instead of focusing on their studies. Cultism on university campuses often lead to students being involved in crimes such as arson, sexual harassment, rape, murder, armed robbery and prostitution. Instead of campuses being peaceful places of learning, many of them are places of intimidation, horror and brutality.
Cult demand blind obedience from their members. Fight for power between cults sometimes create chaos on campuses.
New cults members go through a process of Orientation, in which they learn about the beliefs, rules and rituals of cult, followed by initiation into the cult. This usually include blood oath, which is when two or more people cut themselves so that they bleed and then exchange blood with each other.
Possible consequences of involvement with a cult
Some students are attracted to cult because they think that belonging to the group will change their lives for the better. They are told that initiation into cult is a transition from boyhood to manhood, and from a state of being blind to one of being wise. However, belonging to cult can have a serious negative impact on a student's life and threaten their academic success. Firstly it is possible for a person to be infected with a deadly diseases such as HIV/Aids or hepatitis B when taking the blood oath. Secondly, students are sometimes injured or even killed when rivals cult clash. Furthermore, universities authorities immediately expel students from the universities if they are found to be cult members, resulting in severe consequences for their future careers.
Abstain from any illegal society that can destroy now and the future
