"The geologist takes up the history of the earth at the point where the archaeologist leaves it, and carries it further back into remote antiquity." ~ Bal Gangadhar Tilak,
Welcome to the 150th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.
Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Ecology: Waste Management Practice. Plastic.
According the researches by American Association of the Advancement of Science, by 2015, humanity has come up with 6.3 billion tons of plastic waste, 9% of which was recycled, 17% burned, and 79 buried in the ground or scattered on its surface.
Properties of polymers allow them to be present in 99% of the things around us. We choose products from various types of plastic, we pay money for this plastic and carry it home. After a while we carry it from the house for processing, burning or ground disposal.
At this rate, by 2050, humanity will live next to 12 billion tons of plastic.
History: NZ history - early Wellington settlers

The was set up to establish colonisation of a young New Zealand, by an enthusiastic group of Englishmen in 1825 who also had their eyes on the lucrative and profitable business deals to be had from products such as flax, native timbers, and whaling. With this in mind, an exploration team was sent out in 1826, and after sailing around the South Island coast for a bit they decided the Te Whanganui-a-Tara harbour area would be ideal and promptly named it Lambton Harbour after the head of the New Zealand Company, John George Lambton . The fact that the area was already occupied by natives, who'd already built a large pa - the Te Āti Awa tribe - did not disrupt their settlement plans.
