The truth is: Belonging starts with self-acceptance. Your level of belonging, in fact, can never be greater than your level of self-acceptance, because believing that you're enough is what gives you the courage to be authentic, vulnerable and imperfect.
I don't know about you, but as I've gone through life some of my most exciting life changing moments have come from finding or interacting with someone whose truth resonated so strongly with me that it immediately impacted my life for the better.
Their ability to stand in that truth and have it shine through so clearly excites and inspires me to no end. I want to explore it with them, ask questions, listen to their response and dive deeper. This then makes me even more excited and then continues the cycle.
One such person that had this impact on me was Brene Brown.
I first encountered her in a Ted talk that she gave back in 2010 on the power of vulnerability. After watching the talk all I could think was how amazing it was and how spot on. She had nailed so many things and put to words something that I think we all intuitively understand but don't fully realize. Not only that but she had a path of practice that you could walk to try and apply those lessons and bring them into your world. I was blown away.
I immediately went out and read her books and feel in love with her and her mission even further. She's a vulnerability researcher from Texas and her personality comes out in full in everything she does. She's not only an incredible storyteller, but also is an outstanding model of living what she preaches. She owns her vulnerability and mistakes and uses real world examples and experiences to bring to life the truth she's discovered in her research.
It all comes together to be hugely impactful and to this day I can always go to her work and find something valuable that helps me show up as a better version of me in this world. A version that's more in line with how I want to be in this reality.
I'm going to share with you that first Ted talk that so grabbed me and then the follow up talk that she gave later after the first one. Both are incredible and serve as just a primer that may inspire you to look into her work further where I've encountered a gold mine of knowledge and wisdom. I invite you to watch them and share what stands out for you in the comments below.
