Tucked away on the canals of Xochimilco in Mexico is Isla de las Muñecas.
Translated into English it means ‘Island of the Dolls’ and it promises exactly that.
Creepy dolls are strung over trees and propped on fences over this haunted Mexican waterway.
They’ve been there for decades and the story behind them is just as eerie as the sight of their headless bodies and bodiless heads.
It began when the body of a young girl washed up at the spot and the island’s caretaker found a doll floating in the water nearby which he presumed belonged to her.
As Don Julian Santana Barrera grew disturbed he strung up more dolls, believing they were possessed with the spirits of other dead girls.
He did this for some 50 years before meeting his own tragic end.
In 2001 his body was found floating dead in the exact spot where he found the girl years earlier.
