Something about finding out there is only 1 Blockbuster left in the US made me a little nostalgic. Generations will never know the excitement of making a special trip to Blockbuster to find that special video on a Friday night.
The entire experience was an EVENT. Making the decision to leave the house, entering the well lit store and pacing the aisles. You might even pick up some popcorn and red vines for when you got home.
Sorry for the fuzzy picture you are about to see but after all.... Blockbuster is a relic of the past ...
It is possible we glamorize things when looking back. The reality was that many times the video you wanted wasnt available.
If you had commitment issues, this could be a problem too. Once you picked a VHS, you were stuck with it for days, not matter how terrible it was. You couldn’t just exit out like a streaming service and pick something else.
Then there was the rewinding, the late feeds, the gas money...
Even still there was something magical about finding that rare title that no one else knew about.... another version of Goldmatters Searches for gold. I supposed ive always been a treasure hunter.
Blockbuster also had video games:
I started thinking about all this when I read this article:
The article descibes how now there will only be one blockbuster left in the US.
ONE!!
These stores used to be like Starbucks, they were EVERYWHERE. I remember spending a whole night driving to like 12 of them looking for a specific video.
So why am I bringing all this up and what does it all have to do with gold?
Over a long enough time frame, all technology will become obsolete and almost every business will eventually not exist. Just ask Lehman brothers.
Lehman had been around for 158 years before well.... we all know the story:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bankruptcy_of_Lehman_Brothers
An even better example would be to take a look at the DOW. The DOW, the most recognizable stock index has been around since 1896.
Does that mean it has longevity?
Not really.
The very last of the original 30 DOW components has just left the building:
Just look at the obsolete companies:
http://www.businessinsider.com/dow-original-companies-2016-12
No business model, no concept, no technology are immune to the ultimate app killer:
Time.
Except for ONE thing, time will destroy any business eventually.
Anyone want to guess where this is leading?
Gold does not rust, gold does not tarnish, and gold lasts....forever
Gold is the ONE THING that can NEVER go out of business.
So while no one will ever say “Let’s make it a blockbuster night “ again, or own those 30 orginal DOW components, you can still own gold that existed at the same time as them somewhere in the earth:
This means that gold will ALWAYS have value and always be desired by human beings. Literally nothing else has the track record that gold does.
Which makes gold....
Historys blockbuster.
