The 100kg gold maple leaf has a face value of 1,000,000 Canadian dollars but is worth $4,700,000 usd for its melt value. The coin was one of the first gold coins to be 99.999% pure. There are 5 of these monstasaties made by the Canadian Royal Mint, only the Australian 1 tonne gold coin is bigger.
One of the five was stored in the Bode Museum in Berlin until March 27, 2017. Early that morning, thieves used a ladder to get through a window away from security then broke the bullet proof glass around the coin, seized it, and escaped quickly. Police eventually caught and arrested the four suspects but the coin had already been sold and possibly melted.
