My son mentioned this to me today and had no idea it was even being raised. Most of you are probably aware that in South Africa we have a quota system for sports teams in the country. This has been going on for a long time and believe it shouldn't even be an issue. In my eyes you are good enough and make whatever team on merit and nothing else.
The latest is the Sports Minister is trying to enforce a quota in school athletic events now as low as primary school races which means children as young as nine are caught up in the mix. My mind is saying that race, skin color and religion shouldn't be in a young child's mind and it is only highlighting differences. I don't think they realize the damage they are doing as racialism shouldn't be a thing today and they are making it worse.
If you are competing for a race and you have qualified you could be bypassed by another athlete due to skin color. What that is going to do is chase people away from competing as it isn't right. That child who has been put into the race doesn't even have to qualify as no times are necessary. They say a child with a previously disadvantaged background takes preference. I get that thought process but the Government has been in power since 1994 which is 25 years ago.
Personally I think they are creating hatred by doing this and it shouldn't ever be raised in sporting events. Sport is all about talent and nothing else.
