If you follow my posts here, or at SSGPress you have probably seen the hashtag PoliceStateUSA. It tends to be in a context that makes it understandable, I.e., along with stories, photos, or videos of police beating people, shooting people, pepper spraying peaceful protesters, etc but some people don't understand the full scope of my favorite hashtag. Now while the hashtag does in part stand for the constant abuse of power and authority that has been well documented across the nation, it also stands for the general and gradual loss of freedoms experienced, again, all across the nation, whether it be on the local, state, or federal level.
At times it seems that the only thing happening faster than unwarranted use of extreme force by police, is the banning of freedoms. From the old law banning adults from choosing what they can and can't put in their own bodies, to a bill once against being pushed in congress that would make it illegal to own, yes own, not just buy, sell, or even wear, but to own, body armor, and many other ridiculous rules and regulations.
Some call the US "The land of the free," but in truth the US isn't the freest country on Earth, and depending on whether you mean legal freedoms or fiscal freedom, and whether or not you believe the rather vicious propaganda spread by the US about various other countries, the US ranks somewhere in the twenties for both, or possibly even in the thirties depending on the study you choose to believe, and there is a great amount of difference between what a conservative study, liberal study, and of course anarchist study will define as "free." This variety of differences and the rather asinine ways some of the "studies" try to bend the facts to a particular political viewpoint can change the rankings greatly. But the best position I found the US at was in a ranking done by a far right political organization who's name I wont say. They put the US at 11th place, and blamed the ranking on lack of corporate and religious freedom rather than personal legal and economic freedoms, or lack thereof.
Regardless of political affiliation, or again, a lack thereof, any thinking person can clearly see the rash of police misconduct, laws limiting personal freedom, and shrinking economic freedom, and know that these things are not indicative of a free nation or society, and so I use PoliceStateUSA, to bring awareness to the issues of declining freedom, and growing police power, and abuse of power.
